Hiking, biking and climbing in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park

The Kingdom of Fanes is not just a place you visit. It is a landscape you enter: rocks, high plateaus, mountain lakes, huts, legends and silence. Just outside San Vigilio at Kronplatz, the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park begins – one of the most impressive natural areas in the Dolomites and part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

For your summer in the Dolomites, we have selected three tours that take you right into the heart of this world: a hike to Lé de Limo and up to Col Becchei Dessora, a mountain bike tour from AMA Stay to Ücia Lavarella, and an alpine via ferrata to Piz dles Conturines.

Three ways to experience the mountains. Three levels of intensity. One truly special setting.

🥾Hike: from Pederü to the summit of Col Becchei Dessora – and back

This hike is a true classic in the Kingdom of Fanes: long, scenic and full of real Dolomites moments. The starting point is Pederü, which you can easily reach by bus. With the Kronplatz Guest Card, the ride is free. Alternatively, you can arrive by car; the road is subject to a toll.

From Pederü, follow trail no. 7 or, alternatively, the parallel gravel road through the Valun de Fanes up to the plateau. There you’ll find the so-called “marmot parliament”, several mountain huts and that wide, almost otherworldly Fanes landscape.

At Ücia dles Muntagnoles, turn left onto trail no. 10/11. After passing Ücia de Fanes, continue up to the beautiful mountain lake Lé de Limo, located at over 2,000 metres above sea level. Here you can decide whether to stop, enjoy the calm of the lake and head back – or continue.

If you still have energy, follow trail no. 418 up to the summit of Col Becchei Dessora. At the top, the panorama more than makes up for the long climb. The return follows the same route.

Tour facts:
Route: Pederü – Lé de Limo – Col Becchei Dessora – Pederü
Elevation gain: 1,345 m
Total duration: approx. 7–8 hours
Distance: approx. 18 km
Level: medium to difficult
Shorter and easier option: only as far as Lé de Limo

Perfect for: anyone who wants to dive deep into the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park.

🚵‍♀️ Mountain Bike: from AMA Stay to Ücia Lavarella – and back

This mountain bike tour in San Vigilio starts directly at AMA Stay – more precisely, from the bike room on the ground floor. From here, you ride towards Val dai Tamersc and on to Pederü.

You can choose between two options: the asphalt road, which is faster but busier, or the gravel cycle path through the forest, which is slower but quieter and closer to nature.

From Pederü, take the gravel road that climbs up to the Fanes plateau. The first section is very steep, but later the gradient becomes more moderate. Once you reach the plateau, the landscape opens up: mountain huts, small stretches of water and that unmistakable feeling of being right in the heart of the Dolomites.

Keep to the right to reach Ücia de Lavarella. A stop here is almost a must: something good to eat, mountain views and that moment when you know the ride was worth it. The return follows the same route.

Tour facts:
Route: AMA Stay – San Vigilio – Pederü – Ücia Lavarella – AMA Stay
Elevation gain: 880 m
Total duration: approx. 3.5–4 hours
Distance: approx. 38 km
Level: medium

Perfect for: anyone looking for a mountain bike tour around Kronplatz with a hut stop and big Dolomites scenery.

🧗🏻‍♂️ Via Ferrata: “Tru Dolomieu” from Capanna Alpina to Piz dles Conturines – and back

The “Tru Dolomieu” via ferrata is the most alpine option of these three tours. Technically, the via ferrata itself is not very long, but it includes exposed sections and a demanding approach. This route is suitable for those with experience, sure-footedness, a head for heights and the right equipment.

The approach starts at the Capanna Alpina car park, just beyond San Cassiano and Armentarola. Parking is subject to a fee. From there, follow trail no. 11 – long and steep in places, but initially without technical difficulty.

After Col de Locia and the wide plateau of Le Gran Plan, ignore the junction for Ju dal Ega and follow the signs to the left towards Piz dles Conturines. Continue uphill through scree and mountain pines, pass the dry bed of Lé dles Conturines and follow the track towards a broad saddle between Piz dles Conturines on the left and Piz de Lavarellaon the right.

At the saddle, continue left to the start of the equipped route. The via ferrata is relatively short, but includes some unprotected and highly exposed sections. From here, the route leads along the ridge and finally to the summit of Piz dles Conturines. The return follows the same route.

Tour facts:
Route: Capanna Alpina – Piz dles Conturines – Capanna Alpina
Total elevation gain: 1,350 m, including approx. 100 m of via ferrata
Approach: approx. 4 hours
Via ferrata duration: approx. 30 minutes
Distance: approx. 18 km
Level: medium, but highly exposed

Important: Only attempt this via ferrata in safe conditions, with a via ferrata set, helmet, experience and a good weather forecast. When in doubt, plan the tour with a guide.

Perfect for: anyone looking for a real alpine experience in the Dolomites – with focus, rock contact and wide-open views.

In the heart of the Kingdom of Fanes

From San Vigilio at Kronplatz, the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is right on your doorstep: Pederü, the Fanes plateau, mountain huts, trails and alpine routes are all within easy reach.

That’s the beauty of this place: heading out in the morning, diving into the mountains, finding your own rhythm. And coming back later with tired legs, a clear mind and images that stay.

Maybe there’s still time for a moment in the spa, a drink on the terrace – or simply no plan at all for the rest of the day.

Summer in the Dolomites, AMA Stay style.
